The Institut Monétaire Luxembourgeois, established only in 1983 to replace the Belgian-administered monetary authority, issued this series during a transitional decade when Luxembourg was asserting greater independence over its own financial infrastructure — despite the Belgian franc remaining legal tender alongside the Luxembourg franc under the longstanding currency union.
