| Obverse description | Two Giant Elands (Taurotragus derbianus) depicted in profile facing right, rendered in fine relief against a plain field, conveying a sense of movement and naturalistic vigor. The word ESSAI appears prominently in the upper field above the animals, indicating trial-piece status. The circular legend BANQUE DES ETATS DE L'AFRIQUE CENTRALE runs around the periphery, with the date 1976 displayed in the lower exergue flanked by decorative stops. Engravers' signatures appear discreetly in the field to the right of the animals. |

| Additional information |
The BEAC itself was only established in 1972, replacing the Banque Centrale des États de l'Afrique Équatoriale et du Cameroun, and the mid-1970s coinage program represented the first systematic issue of standardized currency across the six-nation franc CFA zone under the new central bank's authority. Essai pieces like this were produced in limited quantities — typically a few hundred examples — for submission to member governments and monetary authorities before production approval.
The nickel composition adopted here replaced the earlier cupro-nickel alloys used by the predecessor institution.
