| Obverse description | Central design featuring a coiled serpent rendered in fine detail, occupying the majority of the coin's field. The snake is depicted in a naturalistic style, with scaled texture clearly delineated across the body. A circular legend reading 'REPUBLIQUE DU TCHAD' runs along the upper periphery, with '60 ANS DE L'INDEPENDANCE' along the lower periphery, all in raised Latin script. |

The BEAC issues coinage on behalf of six member states — Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon — all of whom share the CFA franc under a monetary union whose peg to the French franc, and later the euro, has been politically contested for decades. Critics within member states have long argued the arrangement, which requires half of foreign exchange reserves to be deposited with the French Treasury, constrains economic autonomy. The 50-franc denomination has circulated across this bloc with no country-specific identification on the coin itself.
