| Obverse description | Central device depicts a stylized mosque or mausoleum facade with a prominent minaret rising above a crenellated parapet, flanked on either side by decorative palm fronds in the lower field. The structure is rendered in low relief with architectural detail including arched niches at the base. An Arabic legend curves along the upper portion of the field, reading 'Banque Centrale' in Arabic script. The entire design is encircled by a beaded border. A mint mark appears at the base of the central device. |

The Comoros issued this denomination through the Banque Centrale des Comores, an institution established in 1981 when the islands severed their monetary arrangement with the Banque Centrale des États de l'Afrique de l'Ouest. The archipelago had previously used the CFA franc, and the creation of a distinct Comorian franc — pegged to the French franc at a fixed rate — required building out a full domestic coinage series from scratch.
KM#16 spans a production window bracketed by two coup attempts: the 1990 electoral crisis that ended Ahmed Abdallah's presidency and the 1995 mercenary-led putsch under Bob Denard.
