France issued its first adhesive postage stamp — the 20c black Ceres — in 1849, making 1999 the true sesquicentennial of French philately. The Monnaie de Paris marked the occasion with this piece, part of a broader late-1990s run of thematic commemoratives that leaned heavily on French cultural patrimony as the euro changeover loomed.
The .920 fineness is characteristic of French gold commemorative issues from this period, slightly below the .999 standard common elsewhere.
