Obverse description The state coat of arms of the Hungarian People's Republic is depicted centrally in the field, comprising a red and white striped shield surmounted by a five-pointed star and encircled by a wreath of wheat ears tied with a ribbon at the base. Below the arms appears the designer's monogram BGY and the mint mark BP., flanked by the large stylised denomination 50 FORINT in which the letter O incorporates an oval design element. The date 1988 is inscribed along the lower rim, while the circular legend MAGYAR NÉPKÖZTÁRSASÁG (Hungarian People's Republic) runs around the upper periphery.
