Budapest hosted the FIE World Fencing Championships in 2019, the third time the city had taken the event — previously in 1959 and 1998. Hungary's fencing tradition runs deep enough to justify the commemorative without overstatement: the country has won more Olympic fencing medals than any other nation in history, a record built across disciplines and accumulated over more than a century of competition.
