Additional information

Issued as part of Hungary's commemorative gold program marking the 150th anniversary of Liszt's birth, this coin was struck under the auspices of the Hungarian People's Republic — a government ideologically indifferent to Liszt's Catholicism and his decades spent in Weimar and Rome, but eager to claim him as a national cultural asset. The mint produced these in relatively small proof-quality runs intended largely for export and collector sale, generating hard currency rather than domestic circulation.

The .986 fineness is fractionally higher than standard .900 gold coin practice, aligning instead with Hungarian commemorative gold conventions of the period.
