Aruba separated from the Netherlands Antilles on 1 January 1986 — a process called "Status Aparte" — and the Centrale Bank van Aruba was established that same year specifically to issue a distinct currency, the Aruban florin, pegged at 1.79 to the US dollar. This 50 florin note was part of the inaugural series, meaning it entered circulation almost immediately upon the island's new autonomous status taking effect.

Joh. Enschedé, the Haarlem printer with centuries of security printing experience, handled the entire series. The 1986 date on P#4 makes it the first-year issue of a currency that had no prior existence whatsoever.
