The Yemen Arab Republic's Central Bank issued this series through a period of acute political turbulence — the country had seen multiple coups and assassinations since 1962, and the 1974 military takeover by Ibrahim al-Hamdi brought yet another change of governing authority without interrupting coin production. Currency continuity was a deliberate signal of institutional stability. The series ran through 1985, outlasting al-Hamdi himself, who was killed in 1977.
