Reverse description The upper portion of the reverse presents the conjoined or adjacent busts of United States President George H. W. Bush at left and Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev at right, depicted in portrait facing one another in a diplomatic composition commemorating the December 1989 Malta Summit. The face value 50 EURO appears between the two busts, and the engraver's initials NGB are incused below the left elbow of the Soviet president. The lower portion features a Maltese cross at centre, flanked by the flag of the USSR to the left and the flag of the United States to the right, evoking the symbolic meeting of the two superpowers on Maltese soil. A comprehensive commemorative legend encircles the design, referencing the summit and the fall of the Iron Curtain.
