Obverse description The Greek national coat of arms — a quartered escutcheon bearing a cross — is depicted at centre, encircled by a wreath of olive branches laden with fruit. The curved legend ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ arcs around the upper field, while the denomination 50 ΕΥΡΩ appears in the lower field beneath the shield. The overall composition is framed by an outer border of stylised olive sprays extending to the coin's rim.

Additional information

Issued to coincide with the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, this piece belongs to the Bank of Greece's long-running Olympic heritage series, which draws on Greece's claim as the birthplace of the Games — a point Athens has pressed in numismatic form since the modern revival began in 1896. At one gram of fine gold and 14mm across, production costs per unit are high relative to metal value, making these instruments of commemoration rather than circulation from the outset.

KM#286 is among the smaller-format gold issues in the Greek catalog, consistent with a broader European trend toward fractional gold proofs marketed directly to collectors through national bank channels rather than through normal mint distribution.
