To the right, a finely modeled high-relief group depicts the two lovers — the chevalier Des Grieux tenderly embracing Manon — seated against a stone architectural background with vertical bars suggesting imprisonment or a quay. To the left, an incuse stylized rendering of an 18th-century sailing vessel alludes to the protagonists' deportation to Louisiana. The Republican monogram 'RF' appears in the upper central field, bisecting the two compositional registers.
