| Obverse description | The obverse features a forward-facing effigy of Marianne, the allegorical figure of the French Republic, rendered in a contemporary artistic style within a central circular medallion. Her flowing hair is adorned with stars, referencing the European Union. The field surrounding the central medallion is divided into geometric segments evoking a dynamic, modernist composition. The circular legend EUROPE CONTEMPORAINE REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE runs along the outer border, with the date 2016 and the mint marks of the Monnaie de Paris appearing at the lower left. |

The Europa Star Programme launched in 2016 as a coordinated initiative among several European mints, each producing coins on a shared annual theme — that year, innovative techniques. Monnaie de Paris contributed by applying its proprietary color-printing and micro-engraving processes developed at the Pessac facility. The series runs through 2017–2024, making this inaugural issue the first of a long cross-mint collaboration with no direct equivalent in prior French numismatic output.
