| Reverse description | The reverse reproduces in high relief a late nineteenth-century medal depicting the celebrated sculptural group known as 'La Marseillaise,' after the monumental work by François Rude adorning one of the pillars of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The composition faithfully renders Rude's dramatic allegory of the Departure of the Volunteers of 1792, with the winged figure of the Genius of War leading warriors into battle. The engraver's attribution 'H. DUBOIS D'après F. RUDE' appears in the field, crediting both the medallist and the original sculptor. The design is contained within a circular border consistent with the medal's original format, lending the reverse a distinctly historical character. |
