Issued as part of Spain's large-format collector series commemorating the 500th anniversary cycle of Columbus's death in 1506, this piece belongs to a run of high-relief, oversized silver issues that the Real Casa de la Moneda produced through the mid-2000s for the numismatic market rather than any circulation purpose. Columbus died in Valladolid, still convinced — or at least still claiming — that the lands he reached were the eastern coast of Asia.
