| Obverse description | A dramatic scene from Corneille's tragicomedy Le Cid is depicted in high relief against a Moorish-arched architectural background rendered in fine guilloche. To the left, an armoured swordsman stands in a menacing posture, while a kneeling male figure gestures imploringly at centre. Dominating the right half of the field, the large figure of Chimène is shown in profile, her hair coiffed upward, gazing downward with a sorrowful expression.
