Comments

The bisontins were a short-lived local complementary currency experiment launched in Besançon in 1998, backed by Crédit Mutuel Doubs and the municipality. The scheme drew deliberately on the memory of Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, the anarchist economist born in Besançon in 1809, whose mutualist theories about interest-free credit exchanges gave the project its intellectual cover — whether or not the participating merchants cared much about the philosophy.

Printed locally by Imedia Europe 2, the notes never achieved wide uptake and the system folded without significant commercial penetration. Surviving examples are uncommon simply because the total issue was small, not because of any redemption or destruction program.
