Additional information

Issued to mark the 500th anniversary of Erasmus's satirical masterwork Moriae Encomium — written in 1509 largely while Erasmus was a guest of Thomas More in England — this coin participates in the Belgian royal mint's long-running commemorative gold program under Albert II. Erasmus himself had deep connections to the Low Countries: born in Rotterdam, educated in Deventer and 's-Hertogenbosch, and closely tied to Leuven for much of his scholarly career.

Mintage for this issue was tightly capped, as is standard for the series, keeping secondary market premiums firm over spot.
