France abolished the death penalty in October 1981 under Robert Badinter, the Justice Minister who had spent decades defending condemned men before finally shepherding the abolition bill through the National Assembly. This coin was issued on the 25th anniversary of that legislation. Badinter himself remained a vocal public figure through this period, and the Monnaie de Paris tied the release directly to the anniversary commemorations organized by the French government.
