Obverse description Right-facing bust of Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis, the Hungarian-Austrian physician, rendered in high relief with fine detail to his jacket, cravat bow tie, and facial features including a prominent moustache. To the upper left, the curved legend IGNAZ PHILIPP SEMMELWEIS follows the coin's rim, while the birth and death years 1818 and 1865 appear in two lines at the left field. To the right of the portrait, the denomination 50 EURO is prominently displayed above the year 2008, with the Rod of Asclepius symbol rendered below. Along the lower rim, the legend REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH arches from left to right, and the engraver's monogram TP appears in the lower-left field.
