Additional information

Slovakia struck these euro-cent patterns in 2004 as part of its accession preparation following EU entry, which formally occurred in May of that year. Kremnica, one of Europe's oldest continuously operating mints, had been producing coinage since at least 1329 and was the natural choice for the new national designs. Spiš Castle, the chosen motif for this denomination, sits on a UNESCO World Heritage site and is one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe by land area — a deliberate assertion of distinct national identity at the moment of political integration.
