Additional information

Euro "probe" pieces — pattern coins struck to evaluate proposed designs or technical specifications before official adoption — were produced by several eurozone mints in the early 2000s as part of the currency's rollout process. Most were never released to circulation and exist today in extremely limited numbers, distributed almost exclusively to mint officials, government agencies, and select institutional collections.

A 2005 date places this piece well after the 2002 public launch, suggesting it relates to later specification testing or a design evaluation for one of the subsequently admitted eurozone member states.
