| Obverse description | The Finnish heraldic lion rampant, brandishing a sword aloft in its right forepaw and treading upon a sabre with its hind legs, occupies the central field in high relief. The date appears to the left of the lion's body, with the mint mark 'M' positioned in the lower exergual area beneath the lion. Twelve five-pointed stars, emblematic of the European Union, are evenly arranged in a ring around the entire periphery of the coin. The design, engraved by Heikki Aulis Häiväoja, is rendered in a bold, classical heraldic style with fine detail in the lion's mane and musculature. |

| Reverse description | A stylised outline map of the fifteen member states of the European Union as constituted at the time of issue is depicted in the central field, rendered against a background of longitudinal lines representing the globe. The face value '50 EURO CENT' is inscribed in bold capital letters to the right of the map. The designer's initials 'LL' for Luc Luycx appear at the lower right of the design. The composition reflects the common reverse type adopted for all eurozone 50-cent coins of the first series. |
