The left profile portrait of King Albert II (modified from that on the 1999-2007 coins) is surrounded by the twelve stars of the Union, between two of which are the letters BE for `Belgique` and the royal monogram: an A with the numeral II below, surmounted by a crown. This new national face was created to comply with the new recommendations of the European Central Bank.
