| Additional information |
Clemens von Pirquet coined the word "Allergy" in 1906 — the term derived from the Greek *allos* (other) and *ergon* (reaction) — after his work on serum sickness and tuberculin responses established that the immune system could overreact to foreign substances. The Austrian physician also developed the Pirquet test for tuberculosis exposure, a skin-prick method that remained in widespread clinical use well into the twentieth century.
This coin is part of Austria's long-running "Doctors of Medicine" gold series, which consistently attracts collector interest beyond standard bullion buyers due to its subject specificity. The .986 fineness is slightly above the conventional .9999 or .900 used by most world mints for commemorative gold.
