Additional information

The Marshall Islands began issuing commemorative coinage in the late 1980s under a licensing arrangement that produced dozens of thematic silver rounds with nominal legal tender status — a program driven more by the collector market than any domestic monetary need. The C-47 Skytrain issue belongs to a WWII aviation series released around the fiftieth anniversary cycle of the war's major events.

The C-47 itself was the militarized Douglas DC-3, and it supplied Allied forces at Guadalcanal, dropped paratroopers over Normandy, and flew the Berlin Airlift. Over 10,000 were built.
