| Reverse description | The octagonal reverse displays an elaborate engine-turned guilloche pattern consisting of concentric rings of fine reticulated diamonds radiating outward from a central raised point, filling the entire circular field. The pattern is enclosed by a rope or beaded border, beyond which a wreath of laurel or olive branches frames the design against the plain octagonal periphery. No legends or inscriptions appear on the reverse. The overall effect is a highly decorative, lathe-turned geometric design characteristic of mid-19th century private California gold issues. |
