Standard Chartered has issued banknotes in Hong Kong continuously since 1862, making it one of only three commercial banks still authorized to do so under the territory's unusual currency arrangement — where note issuance is handled by licensed banks rather than a central bank, with the Exchange Fund acting as a passive backstop. The 2018 series marked a design refresh across all denominations, printed by Giesecke+Devrient in Leipzig, the same German security printer the bank has used across multiple series cycles.
