Reverse description The reverse displays a finely detailed rendering of the Santa María, Christopher Columbus's flagship on his 1492 voyage, depicted under full sail on stylized ocean waves and occupying the majority of the coin's field. The three-masted carrack is shown in profile with rigging and sails intricately rendered, the mainsail bearing a prominent cross. The denomination FIFTY DOLLARS arcs along the upper periphery, while the fineness inscription 500/1000 FINE GOLD appears in the lower exergue. The Franklin Mint mintmark is visible in the lower field. The design is enclosed by a beaded border.
