Additional information

The Marshall Islands began issuing commemorative coinage in 1986, shortly after gaining independence under the Compact of Free Association with the United States — a political arrangement that left the U.S. dollar as the official currency, making these "50 Dollar" pieces purely collectible instruments with no practical circulation history. The "Advance Forward" series drew on Cold War-era military nostalgia at a moment when that market was peaking among American collectors in the mid-1990s.

KM#377 is one of dozens of Marshall Islands issues from this period, many struck by the Pobjoy Mint on contract.
