| Obverse description | The obverse features the official seal of the Republic of the Marshall Islands depicted in high relief against a mirror-polished field. The seal displays a traditional Marshallese stick chart navigation device at center, flanked by a frigate bird with outstretched wings above ocean waves, with a sailing canoe to the right and tropical vegetation to the left. A radiant sun appears in the upper portion of the seal. The inscription REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS arcs along the upper periphery, with the denomination $50 to the left and the date 1995 to the right, while the national motto JEPILPILIN KE EJUKAAN curves along the lower border. The entire design is encircled by a decorative chain border. |

Issued to mark the June 1995 docking of the Space Shuttle Atlantis with the Russian Mir space station — the first such linkup since the Apollo-Soyuz mission of 1975 — this coin was part of the Marshall Islands' sustained run of commemorative silver dollars targeting the space program collector market throughout the 1990s. The docking itself was the inaugural flight of the Shuttle-Mir program, which ultimately logged nine shuttle visits to Mir before the station was deorbited in 2001.
