The Republic of the Marshall Islands built its commemorative coin program largely on American military themes — a commercially shrewd move given the islands' deep entanglement with U.S. Pacific operations. The Korean War, often called the Forgotten War, saw Marshall Islands-adjacent staging and supply operations, though the islands themselves were still under U.S. Trust Territory administration in 1950 and would not achieve independence until 1986.
This 1997 issue was struck at the British Royal Mint under contract, part of a sprawling RMI commemorative series that flooded the collector market through the mid-to-late 1990s.
