The RCMP centennial series from the Royal Canadian Mint has produced no shortage of commemorative silver, but this issue draws on an institutional history stretching back to the North-West Mounted Police Act of 1873 — when Parliament created a paramilitary force specifically to assert Canadian sovereignty over the newly acquired Rupert's Land before American settlement patterns could complicate the border. The force reached the prairies via the "Great March West" of 1874, some 275 men covering nearly 1,300 kilometres under severe conditions before establishing Fort Macleod.
The .9999 fineness is atypical for circulation-weight silver and reflects the Mint's premium collector standard introduced for flagship issues.
