Obverse description The national seal of the Republic of the Marshall Islands occupies the central field, depicting a traditional Marshallese stick chart navigation device flanked by a sailing canoe to the right and a flying fish to the left, with a radiant sun above and palm trees in the background. A frigate bird with outstretched wings surmounts the composition. The circular legend REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination $50 appears to the left and the year 1994 to the right. The Marshallese national motto JEPILPILIN KE EJUKAAN curves along the lower border, and the entire design is framed by a decorative beaded inner border.

Additional information

The Marshall Islands had no mint of its own and no meaningful numismatic tradition when it began issuing commemorative coinage in the late 1980s, contracting production to foreign facilities to generate revenue — a practice common among newly independent Pacific nations with limited economic options. The 50th anniversary of the Normandy landings generated a wave of such issues from multiple sovereigns, and this piece belongs firmly to that commemorative flood.

KM#181 is one of several D-Day-themed denominations the Marshall Islands released in 1994, each targeting the collector market rather than circulation.
