Reverse description The reverse portrays an astronaut in a full spacesuit and Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) harness floating freely in space, depicted in high relief against a star-scattered field with the curved surface of the Earth visible along the lower portion of the coin. The legend FIRST UNTETHERED SPACE WALK - 1984 arcs around the left and upper periphery of the field. To the lower right, the denomination 50 FIFTY DOLLARS is inscribed in a decorative cartouche. The composition commemorates mission STS-41-B astronaut Bruce McCandless II's historic untethered spacewalk of February 1984.
