Vasco Núñez de Balboa crossed the Darién isthmus in September 1513 and became the first European to sight the Pacific Ocean from the Americas — an achievement that directly accelerated Spanish colonization of the entire western coast of South America. He was beheaded four years later on orders from the governor Pedrarias Dávila, largely out of political rivalry.
Cook Islands issued a long series of silver 50-dollar explorer pieces through the late 1980s and early 1990s, many struck by the Valcambi or Pobjoy mints for the collector market rather than any circulation purpose.
