Reverse description Full-length figure of Spanish conquistador Vasco Núñez de Balboa depicted in three-quarter view, clad in armour and a cloak, raising a sword aloft in his right hand while holding a large unfurled banner in his left, commemorating his 1513 crossing of the Isthmus of Panama and discovery of the Pacific Ocean. Several accompanying figures — armoured Spanish soldiers and indigenous people — are rendered in lower relief in the background field. The denomination $50 appears in the upper right field, and a decorative inner border frames the lower portion of the design. The curved legend VASCO NÚÑEZ DE BALBOA arcs across the upper periphery, with the Franklin Mint mark FM at lower right.
