| Obverse description | The obverse features the coat of arms of Niue centrally positioned in the field, depicting a quartered shield surmounted by the St Edward's Crown. The shield quarters display the Southern Cross stars, three sailing ships, a plantation palm, and crossed hammer and pick, representing Niue's heraldic identity. The shield is flanked on each side by a sprig of silver fern, the national emblem of New Zealand. Niue began issuing commemorative coinage in the late 1980s as a deliberate revenue strategy — the island's GDP was negligible and philatelic and numismatic programs offered a direct path to foreign currency income. This piece was released in 1988, the year Graf completed the Golden Slam: all four Grand Slam titles plus Olympic gold at Seoul, the only time in tennis history anyone has achieved that in a single calendar year.
