Additional information

Garfield Sobers was knighted by the Governor-General of Barbados in 1975 — on the island itself, a deliberate choice reflecting how thoroughly he was identified with the nation rather than with England. His 1968 feat of hitting six sixes off a single over from Malcolm Nash in Swansea remains statistically unrepeated in first-class cricket for nearly two decades. This issue appeared the year after Sobers turned 70, part of a broader Barbadian pattern of commemorating its most internationally recognized citizen in precious metal at intervals throughout his later life.
