Additional information

Senichi Hoshino managed the Hanshin Tigers to their first Japan Series championship in 1985 and later led the Chunichi Dragons, but his appearance on a Cook Islands gold issue reflects the peculiar economics of the small-nation commemorative coin industry in the early 2000s — a period when Pacific island territories with limited populations but full sovereign minting rights became vehicles for collector-market pieces with no genuine domestic circulation intent. Cook Islands issued dozens of such personality-driven gold pieces in this period, nearly all destined for the Japanese collector market.
