| Reverse description | Central composition combining a detail from Canaletto's veduta painting of San Giorgio Maggiore with a fragment of an altarpiece housed within the basilica, rendered in high-relief engraving against a mirror-polished proof field. The architectural grandeur of the Venetian island church is evoked through the juxtaposition of the exterior cityscape and the interior devotional artwork. The artist's name CANALETTO appears in the upper field, while the inscription SAN GIORGIO MAGGIORE is placed along the lower portion of the design. |

| Additional information |
San Giorgio Maggiore, the Palladian church on its own small island in the Venetian lagoon, was begun in 1566 but not completed until 1610 — long after Palladio's death in 1580. Niue has issued gold coins under its own authority since the 1990s through licensing arrangements with foreign mints, a practice common among small Pacific sovereigns whose numismatic programs far outpace any domestic circulation need. This piece was struck at the New Zealand Mint.
