Additional information

This issue belongs to the wave of Pacific island commemorative programs that flooded the collector market through the late 1980s, many struck by the Pobjoy Mint or similar private contractors under license. Roald Amundsen reached the South Pole on December 14, 1911 — beating Scott's ill-fated party by 33 days — having made the calculated decision to use sled dogs and eat them progressively for food and weight reduction during the return march.

Cook Islands had no particular connection to Amundsen. The denomination is nominal; these circulated nowhere.
