The Pinzón brothers — Martín Alonso and Vicente Yáñez — captained the Pinta and Niña respectively on Columbus's 1492 voyage, and their contributions were substantial enough that Martín Alonso briefly separated from the fleet entirely in November 1492, allegedly in pursuit of gold on his own account. This coin belongs to Cook Islands' extensive 1993 series commemorating the quincentenary of that first contact. The series was prolific enough to attract criticism from collectors for the sheer volume of issues produced that year.
