Reverse description A covered pioneer wagon drawn by two horses to the left, with a driver seated at the reins, depicted in high relief at the centre of the field. Behind the wagon, an outline map of the continental United States fills the upper right of the field, evoking the westward route of the Oregon Trail. The curved legend 500 YEARS OF AMERICA arcs across the upper field, with the commemorative dates 1492-1992 below it, and the denomination 50 DOLLARS inscribed along the lower rim.

Additional information

The Oregon Trail commemorative series issued by Cook Islands in the early 1990s rode a wave of American frontier nostalgia coinciding with the 125th anniversary of the trail's peak migration years. Cook Islands held a license arrangement with a number of foreign distributors targeting the U.S. collector market during this period — a practice that generated considerable controversy within the numismatic community over whether such issues constituted genuine circulating coinage or de facto medals sold at significant premium.

KM#202 is one of several denominations struck in this series, none of which ever approached the shores of the Cook Islands in circulation.
