Juan Ponce de León led the first documented European expedition to Florida in 1513, sailing north from Puerto Rico under a Spanish patent that granted him governorship of any lands he discovered. The "Fountain of Youth" association came largely from later writers — the primary historical record shows he was searching for the island of Bimini and new territories to govern, not a mythical spring. He returned to Florida in 1521 with colonists and was mortally wounded by a Calusa arrow shortly after landing, dying in Havana.
