Additional information

Part of Cook Islands' prolific late-1980s commemorative silver program, this issue honors Francisco Pizarro, the Spanish conquistador who toppled the Inca Empire between 1532 and 1572. Pizarro's conquest delivered staggering quantities of Andean silver into European hands — the Potosí mines alone would go on to produce an estimated half of the world's silver supply over the following century. There is a certain irony in commemorating him on a silver coin.
