Obverse description The obverse displays the coat of arms of Niue at centre, featuring a quartered shield surmounted by a royal crown. The shield's quarters depict three outrigger canoes, four five-pointed stars representing the Southern Cross, a native figure, a sea shell with wheat sheaves, crossed pick and hammer, and additional canoe motifs. The shield is flanked on either side by sprays of silver fern fronds. The legend 'NIUE' appears to the upper left and '1988' to the upper right along the rim.
