Obverse description The quartered shield of the Niue coat of arms occupies the central field, surmounted by a Tudor crown and flanked on either side by a silver fern frond. The four quarters of the shield display, respectively, the Southern Cross constellation of five stars, three sailing ships, a Niu tree with a native figure, a sheaf, and a hammer and pick. The legend 'NIUE' arcs along the upper left and '1989' along the upper right, both in the field between the ferns and the rim.
