| Obverse description | The quartered shield of the Niue coat of arms occupies the central field, surmounted by a Tudor crown and flanked on either side by a silver fern frond. The four quarters of the shield display, respectively, the Southern Cross constellation of five stars, three sailing ships, a Niu tree with a native figure, a sheaf, and a hammer and pick. Niue's early commemorative program leaned heavily on licensed sporting themes as a revenue mechanism rather than any genuine connection to the events depicted — the island had no Davis Cup history whatsoever. These issues were produced under contract arrangements common among small Pacific island nations in the late 1980s, where the nominal issuer provided legal tender status while a private minting house handled design, production, and distribution entirely.
KM#25 is among the first wave of such issues from Niue, predating the tighter licensing scrutiny that followed later in the decade.
