The "Coming of Age" issue marks the centenary of the Canadian Citizenship Act, which came into force in 1947 — the first legislation to define Canadian citizenship as distinct from British subject status. Prior to that act, Canadians held no nationality independent of the Crown. The Royal Canadian Mint has used this anniversary series to issue large-format collector pieces with heavily frosted fields and selective coloring, primarily targeting the domestic gift market rather than numismatic collectors in the traditional sense.
The .9999 fine silver specification is consistent with RCM collector issues from this period, which quietly shifted from .9999 to that fineness as a marketing distinction against the .999 standard used by most sovereign mints.
